The “new” New Zealand vodka

In the States, we have a favourite maxim: ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.’ This could very well fit the mindset of Broken Shed New Zealand Vodka (, which is launching in the US this fall.

Though it was meant to be a small-batch craft spirit when it was launched in New Zealand back in 2010, the crossover into select US markets may suggest that vodka giant and marketing juggernaut 42 Below may have some formidable company on the shelves of selective bars and retailers.
While 42 Below will forever have a place in my heart through two invites to New Zealand to swig and stir with the world’s greatest mixologists at their splashy and sporty Cocktail World Cup, it is exciting to see a true Kiwi independent stake their claim. Given that 42 Below was founded by former ad exec and marketing genius (and all-round nice guy) Geoff Ross, it is intriguing to see other imaginative and ambitious people get into the game with another delicious way to put New Zealand on the map.
Make no mistake, however. Broken Shed is truly its own vodka with its own concept. It is distilled four times from New Zealand whey (excess sugar generated from milk production), which has been distilled to the highest standards in New Zealand for over 25 years. Though few vodkas are distilled from whey, it is an excellent natural source for distillation of pure spirit. Broken Shed Vodka is free of additives and blends two distinct water sources from New Zealand, one from Central Otago on the South Island and the other from East Tamaki on the North Island. The creators also attribute Broken Shed’s smooth flavour profile to craft blending and filtering during production, specifically continuous depth filtering and a custom-designed charcoal filtration process.
Broken Shed Vodka is based in Wanaka, a small lake town in the mountains of New Zealand’s Southern Alps. The “Shed” is also a growing warehouse for quick, easy and refreshing cocktail recipes.
